“Don’t Bore the Faithful,” says Cardinal Arinze
No, he’s not recommending novelties in the Mass. He says (rightly) that novelties bore us. Quote:
“Then it’s up to the priest. “The way he celebrates and the people around him – does that manifest the faith of the whole Church?” he asks. “Does that wake up those who are half asleep [or] when, next Sunday comes, do they feel, ‘Oh Lord help us, we have to go back to that Church and be again with that priest for one and a half hours?’ ”
And he’s 100% correct. We don’t go to Mass to get an amateur hour. We go to get the faith of the ages and receive the Lord.
Cardinal Arinze is not afraid to be candid and that’s fresh and exciting. At times it’s true that he upsets traditionalists a bit because he’s not pushing the Motu Proprio directly, but he is a friend of reverence and tradition. He’s definitely worth a good listen on the topic. The article is at the Catholic Herald.
